THIS TANK IS MINE SEQUENCING

THIS TANK IS MINE!

Teacher’s Fact Sheet: This Tank Is Mine !

Unit Overview

In this story by Jonathan Fenske, we meet Angelo, a beautiful Angelfish who thinks he is the king of his aquarium. When a new fish joins him, Angelo has to learn that his “treasures” art much more fun when they. Are shared with a friend.

Key Teaching Points

• New Transitions: Moving from being “the only one” to having a “new friend” (useful for new siblings or students).

• Vocabulary of Ownership: Understanding the difference between “Mine” and “Ours.”

• The Reward of Sharing: Discovering that toys (like the bubble man and treasure chest) are fun, but friends are better.

Discussions Starters

• ”At the beginning, why did Angelo want to be all alone?”

• ”How did Angelo’s face change when he started playing with his new friend?”

• “What is something in our classroom that we can say is Ours?”

Teacher’s Logic

“Social-Emotional Core: This unit addresses the common ‘territorial’ behavior seen in Pre-K and Kindergarten. By using a fish tank- a small, contained space-children can easily visualize the concept of ‘making room’ for others both physically and emotionally.”

Story Retelling Puppets

TEACHER & CHARACTER SET

Unit Objectives: These puppets are designed for kinesthetic retelling and auditory recognition. By physically moving the characters the story is read, students develop narrative recall, language fluency, and social-emotional engagement.

Puppet Set Includes:

1. Easy Version: Character circles in black and white for students to color.

2. 1 Teacher Example: A full color set to serve as a visual guide for the finished product.

Directions:

  1. First: Color the character circles. Encourage students to use colors that match the characters found in the book to build visual association skills.
  2. Second: Carefully cut out teacher character images. For younger toddlers, the teacher may want to pre-cut these to focus entirely on the retelling aspect.
  3. Third: Apply a small amount of glue to the top of a large stick (popsicle stick) student, (paint stirrer) used for teacher sticks.
  4. Fourth: Press the character circle onto the glue and let it dry completely before use.
  5. Teacher's Idea: I highly recommend printing these puppets on card-stock. It is much sturdier for little hands and ensures the puppets will last through many story-time sessions!
