THE SUN THIEF SEQUENCING

The Sun Thief

by Alice Hemming

Theme: Natural Curiosity, Misunderstandings, and Simple Science

(Reflection & Light).

Focus: This unit follows a very curious Squirrel who wakes up one morning and can’t find the big yellow sun! His misunderstandings lead him on a funny adventure where he learns that the “stolen sun” is just a beautiful reflection. It’s a fantastic story for normalizing a child’s questions about how the world works and introducing very basic “physical science” concepts like light and water.

Key Teaching Points

•The concept of a Reflection: The core science lesson! What does light do when it hits a smooth surface like water or a mirror?

•Simple Science: A mirror bounces the sun’s light back to our eyes, so we see a picture of the sun, not the sun itself.

•Validating Natural Curiosity: It’s okay to have big questions about the world, like where the sun goes at night! This unit celebrates Squirrel’s desire to understand.

•Expectation vs. Reality: Just because we think we know what is happening (like someone “stole” the sun) doesn’t mean we are right. This unit teaches kids to observe and look for clues before guessing.

•Keats-esque Text & Art: Discussing the detailed illustrations and simple, iterative text (like “ I found a sun!”… “But it was just a _________”) that helps build reading comprehension and prediction skills.
