The Snail and the Whale

Theme: Exploration, Courage, and the Power of Smallness.
Focus: This unit uses the imaginative journey of a tiny snail and a huge whale to teach children about curiosity, bravery, and the importance of helping others. It validates that size doesn't determine worth, and that even the smallest action-like a snail using its silver slime to "save" a whale-can have a massive impact.
Unit Objectives For Teacher Puppet Sticks)
- Objective 1 (SEL): Students will understand the concept of reciprocal help. They will see that the whale helps the snail see the world, and the snail uses its unique "small skill" (slime tracing) to save the whale.
- Objective 2 (Language Arts): Students will identify and proactive movement verbs and contrasting descriptors. Using the puppets, students will describe how the characters move (tiny snail slithers, huge whale glides) and how the environments feel (ice/fire, deep/shallow).
- Objective 3 (Social Studies/Geography): Students will define journey and map and conceptualize that the world is a large place full of different landforms and climates that the whale and snail visit together.
Objective 4 (Pre-STEM/Persistence): Students will describe the persistence of the snail. When the whale is beached, the snail doesn't give up. It finds a creative solution and keeps trying until it finds help.
